Grades 6-12th, 9am-4pm

Pirate Broadcasting with Maker-in-Residence Autumn Chacon: 

FREE

Use electronics to build your own recording devices and broadcast them over the radio waves. Learn about how pirate radio broadcasts have been used as a tool for social justice and helping communities, then create your own broadcast. What information would help your community if you could get the word out?

Funding assistance for this camp has been provided by the Urban Enhancement Trust Fund.

Dive into directing, with your cellular device and create your very own movie. Explore the magic behind filmmaking, scripts, cut scenes, and more.

Biotech:

FREE

Would you like to create medicines, clean up pollutants, or protect crops from pests?

These are just some of the things that you can do as a biotechnologist! Build biotech skills with scientists from UNM as you run experiments that control cells using engineered DNA! You could be starting your career in biotech!

Farming of the Future At the Larry P. Abraham Agri-Nature Center in Los Ranchos:
What is the intersection of farming and tech? In this hands-on, tech-based farm camp, you will explore a variety of aspects of farming and agriculture and innovate current farming methods through coding. Apply technology to centuries-old farming practices and bring your farming into the future.

App Contest:

Have an idea for an app? Be a part of X Studio’s first-ever app contest and learn how to take your idea to develop a prototype of your app. There will be prizes for the top ideas, and you’ll work with the tools and people who do this stuff for a living.

Grades 5th-8th, 9am-4pm 

Watermania with the Center for Water and the Environment At the Larry P. Abraham Agri-Nature Center in Los Ranchos:
Dive into water science with guest educators from UNM’s Center for Water & the Environment. Through coding, designing and inventing, you’ll work with a variety of water samples and test for water quality, build water level monitors, and learn about careers in water management and resources. Water is a crucial New Mexico resource- learn about the intersection of water and tech that has real-world applications! 

Registration for this program is under Teen and Tween Farm Camps.

Grades 6-8th, 1pm-4pm

HipHop + Science:
Gza, Big Sean, and Busta Rhymes are just some of the biggest names in hip-hop to incorporate science into their rhyme schemes. Join musician and educator Professor Phlip, and hip hop artist Liphe the Emcee from Po.10.cee to create beats and grooves, write rhymes, and learn audio engineering. By the end, you will publish your songs on Soundcloud!

Grades 6th-9th, 1pm-4pm

Radio Crafters:
Radio waves are everywhere. Discover how electronics and block coding can harness its invisible energy for communication. Play games, design crafts, and build a project using micro:bits. Learn about the science behind wireless communications.

TV and social media advertising, 3D printing and modeling, animation, and game development are just some of the things you can create all with today's computers. Explore different digital media and develop your inner entrepreneur as you shift from consumer to creator!

Registration Info for Teen Programs

To protect our littlest visitors, masks are recommended, but not required while at Explora. Our staff will be wearing masks.  

Feeling sick? Please stay home! If you are experiencing fever, runny nose, sore throat, or any other contagious symptoms, please stay home and contact us for next steps.

  • Drop Off: Begins 15 minutes before scheduled camp time.
  • Activities: Classroom activities as described.
  • Food: Please pack self-contained peanut-free snacks and lunch as appropriate.
  • Break time: Outside, weather permitting.
  • Pick-up: Adults will be asked to show photo ID at pick-up.

Explora educators develop camp activities with children’s developmental levels in mind. Your children will have the opportunity to learn from and work with older and younger peers and make new friends.

Registration
  • All campers must be able to use the restroom on their own.
  • Please have the following available when you register: emergency contact name and phone numbers; name of alternate adults who can pick up the child; child’s medications, dosages, and physician’s name; child’s insurance information, as well as any allergy or special needs information for your child.
  • Campers should register for camp for the grade most recently completed.

Cancellation Policy
  • If a cancellation is received more than 5 business days before the camp, a refund will be issued for the amount minus a 15% administrative fee.
  • Cancellations received 5 business days or fewer before the camp will not be refunded.
  • Full fees will be refunded if Explora cancels a program.
