What are the different treatments for mental health issues?

Just as with coping mechanisms, treatment options may look different for different people. The first step to learning about your options should always be to consult with your primary care physician (PCP) or an expert in the field, such as a therapist or counselor. Treatment may take many forms, including changes to diet or exercise, talk therapy, peer support groups, or medication.

It is also important to know your rights and options. In New Mexico, starting at the age of 14, youth can seek out their own mental health help. That could include therapy and medications, if necessary. Consulting with your PCP can also help you determine the best options available regarding health insurance and access.
