Students at Alvarado had an unforgettable experience learning about watersheds, water conservation, and native plants, thanks to Ciudad Soil & Water Conservation District and their incredible Rolling River model. This experience complemented the Explora led lesson last month where students created their own mini aquifers and made modeled watersheds.
Through an engaging, hands-on demonstration, students explored how water moves through a watershed, seeing firsthand how pollution travels and how natural features like plants and soil help filter and clean our water. They had the chance to experiment with different scenarios, understanding the impact of runoff, erosion, and human activities on our waterways.
Beyond the Rolling River, students took a walking tour of the campus, discovering the native plants growing right in their own schoolyard. They learned how these plants play a crucial role in stabilizing soil, preventing erosion, and improving water quality when planted along rivers and streams. This real-world connection sparked curiosity and conversations about how we can protect our environment—starting right in our own backyard! Working together Explora and partners such as Ciudad Soil & Water Conservation District @ciudadswcd are able to highlight the STEM occurring right in our community.

Recently, our Education Team partnered with the Zuni Youth Enrichment Project for an evening of activities designed to foster intergenerational connections. "Family Fun Night: Paint & Learn” was held this week at the Zuni Senior Center. After this exciting event, our contact shared this response:
"Elahkwa! (thank you!) for coming down to Zuni to bring an exciting, joyous, and fun-filled event to our community!
We were extremely happy to have you come out and join us. The activities that you had were engaging - so many of the families had children not wanting to leave! Thank you again for the incredible work that you are all doing and bringing to our rural communities. Many blessings to you."
Thanks to Zuni Youth Enrichment Project for having us and to Native News Online for covering our work together. Check out the article using the link in our bio!
