Mechanics Alive is now open! 🎉
Take a walk around the theater to explore this whimsical world of moving art—and when you visit, be sure to try one of the hands-on activities set up just for you, available every Saturday from 10am–12pm!
Meet one of the makers behind Cabaret Mechanical Theatre: Matt Smith.
Born in 1965 in Leicestershire, England, Matt became a friend of the Jackson family at a young age. When Sue Jackson opened Cabaret in 1979, he soon began creating his own automata. Later, alongside fellow CMT artist Paul Spooner, he co-founded The Fourteen Balls Toy Company in 1986 to design and build new work.
“I would define automata as moving cartoons. All of my things have a sequence. They always run through a story.” —Matt Smith

🎨 During spring break camps, we had an incredible day diving into the world of clay with the amazing artists from ALMA (Apprenticeships for Leaders in Mosaic Arts)!
Thanks to the generous support of Albuquerque’s Urban Enhancement Trust Fund, ALMA joined us as Explora Makers-in-Residence to lead a special all-day camp just for middle schoolers. Campers got hands-on with clay, created fun characters, learned mosaic techniques, and even helped build a collaborative mosaic mural that will be on display at Explora!
Huge thanks to our friends at ALMA @ALMATile for sharing their creativity and talent. We love making art and community together! ❤️
